Curriculum Overview
Dance provides opportunities for all students to express their thoughts and ideas through dance.
Allowing students to develop their knowledge, skills, technique and understanding within dance is essential to enable them to perform, choreograph and appreciate dance, including an awareness of its artistic and social contexts. By fostering each student’s talent and allowing students to progress in their creative abilities, the department endeavours to develop life-skills and attributes including decision-making, critical and creative thinking, aesthetic sensitivity and the ability to cooperate with others.
Intent
Dance provides students with opportunities to be expressive, creative and imaginative, using movement to communicate with others.
Implementation
- Plan and deliver lessons to develop the skills necessary to produce original work as students explore their ideas creatively;
- Provide opportunities for students to learn to talk critically about the approaches and skills and techniques of genres, styles and practitioners and to apply these in their own work;
- Ensure the curriculum is focused on the progression and continuity of skills over time to help students to develop skills and techniques in a range of styles;
- Provide opportunities for students to learn to talk critically about the approaches and skills and techniques of genres, styles and practitioners and to apply these in their own work;
- Design activities and ways of working that focus on students improving upon their personal best;
- Celebrate students’ work through classroom displays, school performances, Gateway Times and competitions throughout the GLC and the wider community;
- Provide opportunities for students to work in groups to foster confidence and creativity;
- Put pupils at the core of all our work and aim to foster a sense of enjoyment and fun;
- We develop imagination, commitment, creative thinking and self-discipline;
- Celebrate students’ work through classroom displays, school performances and the Gateway Times;
- Plan and deliver a curriculum that is inclusive for all students.
Impact
- Be able to articulate a knowledge and appreciation of Dance in its many forms, styles and contexts;
- Have a life-long passion for the subject and will want to achieve well.
