The Thames Freeport Exceptional Scholarship Programme - access to education goals and life opportunities for Gateway Academy Students

 

 

In 2025 Thames Port launched its Scholarship Programme, to support the educational ambitions of aspiring individuals. The programme provides annual scholarships to help recipients achieve their academic and personal goals.

 
Our Mission         

The Thames Freeport Exceptional Scholarship Programme is committed to increasing educational opportunities for students at The Gateway Academy from underprivileged backgrounds and resource-limited environments. We aim to empower students by removing barriers to their education, ensuring they can unlock their full potential and enhance their future opportunities. We want students to be encouraged to study at university or pursue apprenticeship programmes without facing financial constraints, so they can reach their career aspirations.
Overview of Scholarship Programmes

Thames Freeport Exceptional Scholarship (Year 11)

  • Year 11: Funded Careers Day, including travel expenses, a two-course meal, clothing allowance (for professional dress), an inspirational speaker event, and visits to some of London’s top attractions.

Thames Freeport Exceptional Scholarship (Year 12)

  • Year 12: Funded opportunities, including travel expenses, food vouchers, books, a laptop, and a clothing allowance (up to £800 in the academic year).
  • UCAS Application: Support and funding, including liaising with your sixth form or college.
  • Mentorship: A professional mentor provided from Year 12 through to the completion of your educational qualifications and securing employment.

This scholarship will help me achieve my lifelong dream of building a successful future.  I have always aspired to become a family lawyer, helping those who cannot help themselves and ensuring that underprivileged individuals receive the best possible outcomes in legal situations.  Coming from a single-parent family struggling financially, I have first-hand experience of these challenges.  I will be the first in my family to attend university, making my parents proud.  This scholarship will support me, giving me the extra push needed to reach my aspirational goals and achieve my dreams without the burden of financial stress.  A Gateway Academy Scholarship Recipient

 

Moving to the UK was not an easy choice for my family—it was a necessity.  Leaving behind the only home I had ever known was heartbreaking.  We left friends, loved ones, and a sense of security in search of a better life and greater opportunities.  The transition was overwhelming, as we faced not only cultural differences but also financial instability.  My parents work tirelessly to provide for us, but the cost of living and higher education expenses weigh heavily on our family.  Knowing the sacrifices they made motivates me to succeed.  However, without financial support, my dream of becoming a neurosurgeon may remain out of reach.  A Gateway Academy Scholarship Recipient

 
Coming from a low-income background already puts me at a disadvantage.  People like me are often underestimated and labelled as incapable of achieving greatness.  However, with the funding and mentorship from the Thames Freeport Exceptional Scholarship, I can prove that individuals from humble beginnings can attain academic excellence, save lives, and make a difference in the world.  A Gateway Academy Scholarship Recipient
