All Different: All Equal
Together, Improving Upon Our Best

More Able

At The Gateway Academy, we believe passionately that our More Able students need and deserve access to a wider range of opportunities both within and outside of the classroom. Three students have left Gateway with straight 9s with many more achieving 8s and 9s in all their subjects.

We weave our values into our More Able provision:

1. Fostering Resilience: Providing appropriate challenges for high-ability students enables them to develop resilience by encountering tasks that stretch their capabilities. This helps them build perseverance and adaptability in the face of difficulties, preparing them for future academic and life challenges.

2. Nurturing Aspiration: Tailored provision for our more able students cultivates a sense of aspiration, encouraging them to aim higher and reach their full potential. With access to opportunities that match their skills, they are motivated to set ambitious goals and pursue excellence.

3. Developing Compassion and Responsibility: A well-rounded provision helps high-ability students to develop compassion by engaging them in collaborative activities where they support and mentor peers. By taking on leadership roles, they learn the responsibility of using their talents to positively contribute to their school community and beyond.

4. Creating a Sense of Belonging: Providing for the needs of more able students ensures they feel valued and understood within their school environment. This inclusive approach nurtures a sense of belonging, helping them stay connected to their peers while thriving academically.

Since the inception of Grammar Band over 8 years ago, Gateway Academy more able students in Grammar Band have achieved over 1,245 Grade 7-9s or equivalent. Significantly, our students achieve above the National Average at Grades 7-9 in a wide range of subjects as a result of their own hard work and the expert teaching and support they receive.

More able students at The Gateway Academy have access to a wide range of extra and super-curricular opportunities. These include Academic Masterclasses across a range of themes, delivered by our subject experts. This year's Academic Masterclasses can be viewed in full above or below as a link.

We are proud to enter our more able students for the world-renowned Mensa test. We do these twice yearly and currently have 5 students on roll with an IQ in the top 2%, making them eligible for membership into Mensa.

More able students in Years 10 and 11 have their own dedicated academic mentor and are encouraged to develop their own sense of academic rigour through focused discussion on their progress and attainment.

We have three more able tutor groups in each of years 7, 8 and 9. This allows for bespoke tutoring, access to a wider range of literature, debate and discussion, as well as the monitoring of academic progress and attainment.

In addition, there are visits to Oxford and Cambridge Universities as well as talks and presentations given by their regional outreach teams here at the Academy.
